Paper Star Trek free essay sample
As a result, not only could he process information at lightning speed and arrive at rational conclusions, he also seemed to have desires, interests, and inclinations. He could formulate relationships and make free choices. In this episode, Commander Bruce Maddox, a member of the scientific research division of Starfleet, arrives on board the Enterprise with orders for Data to be transferred to him for the purpose of being disassembled with the goal of learning more about ââ¬Å"itâ⬠(Maddox refers to Data as ââ¬Å"itâ⬠, not ââ¬Å"himâ⬠, throughout the entire episode). His ultimate goal is to create an army of androids like Data which can serve the needs of Starfleet in space exploration. When Data learns that Maddox may not be able to reassemble him, he refuses to submit to the orders and is supported by Captain Picard, captain of the Enterprise and Dataââ¬â¢s commanding officer. Picard argues that, as an officer on the Enterprise, Data has rightsââ¬âamong them the right to refuse to undergo an experimental procedure such as this. However, Picard is unsuccessful in getting the transfer orders rescinded and so Data resigns from Starfleet. Maddox takes legal action with the local JAG (Judge Advocate General) officer challenging Dataââ¬â¢s resignation and arguing that Data is not a person with a right to resign, but, being a machine, ââ¬Å"itâ⬠is the property of Starfleet. He argues ââ¬Å"Would you permit the computer of the Enterprise to refuse a refit? â⬠going on to claim that Picardââ¬â¢s reaction is, ââ¬Å"emotional and irrational. You are endowing Data with human characteristics because it looks human, but it is not. If it were a box on wheels I would not be facing this opposition. The JAG officer concurs with Maddox and rules that Data is the property of Starfleet and cannot resign or refuse to co-operate. Picard requests a hearing to challenge the ruling and is placed in the position of being the defending attorney for Data while his senior officer, Commander Riker, is given the unenviable job of prosecuting attorney. Riker opens his case by having Data define android which Data defines as â â¬Å"an automaton made to resemble a human being. â⬠Riker emphasizes ââ¬Å"automatonâ⬠and ââ¬Å"resembles. After demonstrating Dataââ¬â¢s abilities as a machine, Riker summarizes his argument: The commander is a physical representation of a dream; an idea conceived of by the mind of a man. Its purpose: to serve human needs and interests. Itââ¬â¢s a collection of neural nets and heuristic algorithms. Itââ¬â¢s response dictated by elaborate software written by a man. Itââ¬â¢s hardware built by a man. And now a man will shut it off. With that Riker reaches behind Data and turns the switch that shuts him down say ââ¬Å"Pinocchio is broken. His strings have been cut. During a recess in the proceedings, Picard consults with Guinan, a wise alien on board the Enterprise and becomes convinced that the real issue in this case is the creation of a race of Dataââ¬â¢s to be enslaved to do manââ¬â¢s bidding. He believes this issue has been obscured ââ¬Å"behind a comfortable, easy euphemismââ¬âpropertyâ⬠and is determined to challenge that thinking. In his opening defense Picard acknowledges that Data is a machine but comments that this is irrelevant, ââ¬Å"We too are machines, just machines of a different type. He also acknowledges that, as Data was created by a human, so are we, ââ¬Å"Children are created from the building blocks of their parents DNA. Are they property? â⬠He then asks Data a series of questions demonstrating that, like any person, he has wants and desires, values things, and forms deep personal relationships. Picard then calls Maddox to the stand and asks for the definition of a sentien t being. Maddox offers three criteria: ââ¬Å"Intelligence, self-awareness and consciousness. â⬠Picard goes on to ask Maddox to ââ¬Å"prove to the court that I am sentient. When Maddox claims that Picardââ¬â¢s sentience is obvious, Picard asks what the difference between himself and Data is. Maddox replies that Picard is self-aware (he acknowledges the first criteria of Dataââ¬â¢s intelligence) and defines self-aware as ââ¬Å"Conscious of your existence and actions. You are aware of yourself and your own ego. â⬠Picard turns to Data and asks him what he is currently doing. Data replies, ââ¬Å"I am taking part in a legal hearing to determine my rights and status: am I a person or property. When asked what is at stake, he replies, ââ¬Å"My right to choose. Perhaps my very life. â⬠Picard points out how often Data refers to himself in his reply, ââ¬Å"My rights, my status, my right to choose, my life. He seems reasonably self-aware to me. â⬠He then asks Maddox, ââ¬Å"What if Data can fulfill the last criteria, consciousness, in even the smallest degree? What is he then? Do you know? â⬠He asks the same question of Riker and the JAG officer and goes on to say, ââ¬Å"Starfleet was founded to seek out new life, well there it sits. Picard argues that if we create an army of Datas to do manââ¬â¢s bidding, then ââ¬Å"Thousands of Datas become a race. Wonââ¬â¢t we be judged by how we treat that race? â⬠After considering the arguments, the JAG officer makes her final ruling: It sits there looking at me and I donââ¬â¢t know what it is. This case has dealt with metaphysics, with questions best left to saints and philosophers. I am neither competent nor qualified to answer those. But Iââ¬â¢ve got to make a ruling to speak to the future. Is Data a machine? Yes. Is he the property of Starfleet? No. We have been dancing around the basic issue: Does Data have a soul? I donââ¬â¢t know that he has. I donââ¬â¢t know that I have. But I have got to give him the freedom to explore that question himself. It is the ruling of this court that Lt. Commander Data has the right to choose. Data exercises his right to refuse to undergo the procedure encouraging Maddox to continue his research. Maddox agrees to rescind his request for transfer, commenting about Data that ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s remarkable. ââ¬

The Emperors Club free essay sample
The bigger mistake was letting Cedric go on through his student life without the professor doing something about his cheating and isbehaviours. Even if the professor caught Cedric cheating and doing pranks and disrespectful acts to his teachers, co-students and to his school, he still tolerated the bad acts of the child and didnt do anything to correct and sanction Cedric even if he knew that it must be corrected and reprimanded. Giving Cedric something he doesnt deserve in the first place and not reprimanding him is a huge crime already. These served as the primary causes for the child to carry on through his wicked character and attitude. Cedric grew up knowing that he could get anything easily even if he didnt deserve it and that he could get away with anything without him being lectured/ reprimanded to. Everything rooted from his school days. If I were the professor, I never would have given a child something that he/she doesnt deserve. We will write a custom essay sample on The Emperors Club or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Giving something they dont deserve results to them believing that they could get anything they want without them exerting an honest and diligent work. Also, supposing that I am in the position of catching a child cheating and doing pranks, I ould reprimand that child right away and give him/ her due sanction. Letting the child believe that he/ she can get away with anything (even bad behaviour) can lead to disastrous outcomes that they could carry on until they grow older. Being an educator is tough. We are torn between our love for our students (children) and our attempt to be parents and strict mentors to them. Letting a child fall and get hurt out of their own misdemeanours are some of the best ways and traits of being a great teacher. Let the students suffer the consequences of their bad doings and let them see that we, teachers, reprimand them if we see them do misbehaviours. If students see that teachers correct, reprimand and give sanctions right away especially when the students know that the teachers know what they did, teachers earn the students respect. Their moral values shall be honed to be strong all throughout their growing up years too because they know that bad behaviour shall not be tolerated and good attitude and character matters most. The Emperors Club By inaorate The Emperors Club free essay sample The Emperorââ¬â¢s Club is a film that addresses many moral and social aspects that are central to contemporary societyââ¬â¢s moral controversy. Can morals be properly instilled in a young person outside of religion? Can our future decisions be predicted based on our current character? Can our current character even be changed or molded? Can morals be learned through studying the classics? The Emperors Clubââ¬â¢s main characters are Mr. Hundert a teacher of classics at a prestigious preparatory school, and an unruly or misunderstood student, Sedgwick Bell. Their characters seem to perpetually butt heads, or at least be contrasting moral characters. How do I understand the ethical choices of the central characters? The main ethical dilemma in this film, I believe, is how Mr. Hundert decides to treat Sedgwick. Mr. Hundert associates himself with Sedgwick, after meeting Senator Bell; Hundert realizes that they both had very demanding and emotionally distant fathers. We will write a custom essay sample on The Emperors Club or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Mr. Hundert is driven to take this unruly student under his wing. Even though the senator is Sedgwickââ¬â¢s paternal father Mr. Hundert endeavors to become his spiritual father. The movie plot begins with Mr. Hundert in his classroom, leading his personal little army of students wearing togas. Sedgwick Bell enrolls and wastes no time in becoming a thorn in Hr. Hundertââ¬â¢s back. With the two of them battling it out for the respect and control of the classroom. Things coming to point when Sedgwick flips off Mr. Hundert and Hr. Hundert laying down a severe rebuke, saying ââ¬Å"stupid is foreverâ⬠. Mr. Hundert travels to meet with Senator Bell concerning the poor behavior of his son. Once seated comfortably, Senator Bell confronts Mr. Hundert about the ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠of what he was teaching his son Sedgwick. Mr. Hundert is obviously taken aback by this question. Evident by him replying, that the senator, of all people should understand the importance of what can be learned from the classics. He goes off and lists civic virtue, philosophy, government, character as values that the ancients had embodied and set examples of. Mr. Hundert continues, saying that as a teacher it is his duty to mold Sedgwick. Here the Senator abruptly cuts him off and condescendingly informs him that he shall not mold his son, but to leave it for himself to do. That Mr. Hundert should only concern himself with instructing his son in such things as his times tables. Obviously not what Mr. Hundert expected to happen there in the Senatorââ¬â¢s office. So basically after being chopped off at the knees in what he regards being a teacher is all about, and after seeing that Sedgwick was wanting of a father figure. The Senatorââ¬â¢s phone call to his son and its obvious negative impact providing evidence of this. Mr. Hundert gives one more try, and challenges Sedgwick, gives him his old textbook, and told Sedgwick that he believed in him. With these actions he disregards the senatorââ¬â¢s warning and attempts to mold him and become a spiritual father to Sedgwick. Sedgwick turns his act around and starts applying himself to his studies. And eventually makes his way near the top of the class, almost qualifying him for a spot in the Julius Caesar contest. So seduced by Sedgwickââ¬â¢s renewed effort, Mr. Hundert decides to bump him up into the last spot kicking some other poor kid out. Hoping that the ends justify the means, Mr. Hundert, a man who believes in the rules, broke them. But there are two moral climaxes in The Emperorââ¬â¢s Club. Both remarkably similar to each other, but taking place some 20 odd years apart. During the Julius Caesar contest it become apparent that Sedgwick is cheating, but because of the senatorââ¬â¢s presence, it is decided to be overlooked. Allowing Sedgwick into the contest and failing to punish the cheating, Mr. Hundert lost the moral high ground so to speak. Failed to live up to the very values and morals he taught. After the cheating incident, Mr. Hundert realizes that he can no longer ââ¬Å"saveâ⬠him, and basically just gives in to him. Sedgwick falls back to his old habits of goofing off and creating mischief in the classroom. Later when Sedgwick graduates, Mr. Hundert confesses that he felt a sense of failure, being unable to change Sedgwickââ¬â¢s ways, and I believe, misplacing his trust and in Sedgwick. The second climax occurs in much the same way. Twenty years later, the kids are all grown up and are societyââ¬â¢s elite. Basically there is to be a rematch to the Julius Caesar contest, and Mr. Hundert is called up from retirement to moderate the contest. Mr. Hundert returns hoping that time has proven him wrong. That Mr. Bell has turned into a fine example of a gentleman and father. And by all appearances this is true. The contest begins, but yet again, Sedgwick cheats. Prompting another sharp rebuke, the decisions that you take define your character and influence your children. In a final insult Sedgwick Bell takes Mr. Hundertââ¬â¢s rhetoric, and moral values and squanders it for his own political ambitions. What do I think is the films ultimate message? I think the film gives us that answer at the very beginning when Mr. Hundertââ¬â¢s dialogue states: ââ¬Å"A manââ¬â¢s character is his fateâ⬠, and at the end where he says something to the effect that the boys had taught him something of inestimable value. That what he did for them mattered and that one misstep with Sedgwick does not blot out a life of goodness. I donââ¬â¢t think it is saying that we all travel a predetermined path, but rather that our small decisions are the foundation

The Legal Drinking Age essays
The Legal Drinking Age essays My contention is that legal drinking age should be remained at aged 18. And to begin, Id like to start by asking questions: How many of you had drink, honestly say that youre a responsible drinker. And: What make you more responsible than the person sitting next to you? Is it because youre older or younger or is it because you understand the consequence of binge drinking. People usually say that an 18-year-old has less tolerance compared to a 21 year old. Although it might be true but tolerance doesnt come with age, it comes with realization of responsibility and in the real society there are people that more responsible at aged 16. My first argument is the teenagers should have their rights once they turn 18. And this is the opinion of Ms. Laschon, chief executive officer of Youth Affair Council of WA, she said that Young people in Australia acquire many rights when they turn 18; right to vote, to serve in the armed forces, right to drive and they can also legally purchase alcohol. Therefore, once people are 18, they have equal rights with adults and they also have a right to be treated as adult. Some people think that the eighteens are not mature enough and they need few more years to grown their brain and make a responsible decision, so a 20 year old Australian is considered mature enough to vote and even die for his or her country but not considered as an adult to enjoy beer with the family on Christmas! It doesnt sound right. Since Australia has a trend of drinking age be lowed for many years, do you think that would be a best choice of keeping these teenagers away from alcohol? But to me, its rather a vote to taking away these peoples rights. Its not the age that matter but how to control your selves. If the legal drinking age is now 21 in Australia, Would this change have any effect on the young people? There is some evidence that rising the legal d...

Personal Development Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Personal Development - Essay Example This feeling of helplessness can further exacerbate their physical symptoms if it is not adequately dealt with. The ministrations of an empathetic and considerate nurse can put the patient at ease so that he or she does not feel too vulnerable. In this medical facility, the nurses were also responsible for administering medications to patients and monitoring blood sugar in the case of diabetic patients. I made the decision to prioritise my work in the morning in order to make as efficient a schedule as was possible for each day. Having reflected on the needs of each patient, I would then arrange them according to the cases of most importance before doing the rounds. Reflecting allowed me to be able to closely study the symptoms exhibited by each of my patients, thus allowing me to come up with the best ways of assisting their recoveries. For instance, I would accord more time for an anxious or discouraged patient in order to be able to speak more with them about their interests and f amily. This would help the patient to feel appreciated and less alienated. There are different theories on the importance of reflection and its basic benefits in a healthcare setting. Donald Schon believed that all reflective practices can be divided into reflection on action and reflection in action (Johns, 2011). Reflection on action basically describes the process of reconsidering an event that already took place while reflection in action is more concerned with processing an event even as it takes place (Redmond, 2006). In my first week of placement, reflection-on-action allowed me to be able to recount the actions of other nurses whom I had accompanied on rounds in order to... This paper approves that the nurse will be able to view his or her activities as part of the overall long-term goals. The nurse grows more confident in her or his own abilities to determine an illness without necessarily consulting medical texts. In stage four, the nurse will be more open to considering the symptoms of an illness as the parts of a whole. The nurse improves in terms of decision making and is more interested in engaging in patient-centred care. In the fifth stage, which is the last stage, the nurse uses past experiences to determine different illnesses of patients and does not rely on texts in determining different illnesses. At this stage, the nurse can also easily incorporate the latest medical procedures into patient treatment in order to produce the best outcomes and assist recovery. This paper makes a conclusion that reflecting on a regular basis will not only improve the quality of services extended to patients, but will also facilitate the personal development of individual nurses. Reflection can be conducted through official channels, such as supervised conferences that allow nurses to express their concerns without fear of censure, or in less formal circumstances like team huddles for ââ¬Ëdecompressionââ¬â¢- which was something that was soon to be started where I was serving as a student nurse. While developing a nurseââ¬â¢s ability to confront daily challenges, reflection also seeks to make sure that nurses remain caring towards their patients, and perceptive of their particular needs.
